ESPN

Style: ESPN has plenty of style and graphics that bring a fun and entertaining effect to the site. Its value as a news entity for Sports gives the site a similar feel to other media news sites such as CNN.com a website on the list. It uses simplistic colors to heighten the text on the page (used to highlight stories and news). It also uses videos and interactive wording to draw in viewers and gain a legitimate viewership.

Functionally: its user friendliness is moderately decent. It does a good job of containing a lot of information, especially on its home page, but it also is fighting an uphill battle because of the amount of information that the site puts out on a regular basis. ESPN is the top sports media site and television broadcasting company in the world. Because of this it must hold and display a hectic amount of information. The specified search for the page allows for easy access to information that can’t be found via the home site. The most intriguing thing about this site isn’t the amount of information it holds and produces, but how it navigates and displays its most pertinent information. The site promotes and displays the information and news that is most followed. College football will have more information displayed that women’s badminton because it is a more viewed sport and more publicized. ESPN knows that it can’t make all information it post the most easily accessed but for the casual viewer of the page using and putting the most valuable and most wanted information on the most accessed part of the site is important and business savvy. Also for information that is not as noteworthy, ESPN does a good job of having creative and well managed web pages that are specified for certain sports and entertainment.

CNN

Style and Functionality: the style of the site mimics that of ESPN another television network that has a website like many if not all of them. ESPN and CNN unlike their newspaper counterparts such as The New York Times they use digital graphics that help display the graphics they use digitally on their news cast. The site is easier to use though than ESPN and formed way better for easy usage when navigating through the site. The color scheme is also very vibrant and plays off of the round text and dark background.

Rolling Stones

Style and Functionality: Rolling Stones website is very well made and updates. I doesn’t use great graphics, but because it is a news website that works for it. The site also does a good job of directing its visitors to where they want to look at articles and information on the site. The site also categorizes its information fairly well, and unlike news site on this list like New York Times is easier to navigate and adds more color than New York Times which gives it more appeal in ways. But both sites are good to use. The site also does a good job of expressing information through pictures which I think makes up for dullness to the site which doesn’t have many digital background graphics. I believe it honestly make sit better, especially for a site and magazine which made its name off of taking provocative picture and being one of if not the biggest music publications in the world.

The State Newspaper

Style: Out of all the sites on this page this one is the most disappointing to me. It hits close to home because it is my hometown of Columbia SC Newspaper. The color scheme is very bland and doesn’t have a very I catching graphic scheme either. The white harsh background also clashes hard with the mostly grey colored graphics and color scheme. Very generic.

Functionality: Its simplistic and user friendly for the most part but its simplicity in style hurts it a lot in my book. The user search for the site is also very limited when looking for archived information (unlike ESPN which helps find non pertinent stories and old information easily traceable). The site is good on content but really should boost its site. I think the reason for the dullness lies in it’s a local newspaper. It doesn’t have to get crazy in detail for the website, because its viewers are homegrown viewers with a long history of viewership.
